strange substitutions
We've had a few strange substitutions this year from Sophisticated Sam as he seeks to out-tacktick opposing managers. I've got to admit though that he caught me totally by surprise with his Cole for Noble and Jarvis for Valencia ones today.

It was almost as of he didn't want to win. Valencia and Noble working their socks off to make it hard for the Ys, and then comes Cole. And Jarvis.

Very strange stuff indeed from the fat man.

Re: strange substitutions
And oddly the better sub would have been to bring Nolan on !

Strange? More like cuntish.

Re: strange substitutions
Collins on for Noble was the obvious choice. Bloody odd.

Re: strange substitutions
Yep... They've contributed heavily to us throwing-away a thoroughly-deserved win against an awful, out-of-sorts Tottenham side...

But don't tell the FACE-PAINTERS that like The Stoat...

I'm surprised that LARD ARSE didn't come-on to gift them all three points...

Still, our sophisticated manager knows better than me...

We're deluded, after all...

Re: strange substitutions
Not strange at all to me. Noble was a sending off waiting to happen so subbing him was good sense. For once BFS leaves Nolan on the bench and posters still make him wrong with his substitutions.

This highlights to me that outside of our best midfield four we lack anyone of sufficient quality. Hopefully this situation will be addressed in the close season.

Re: strange substitutions
I can understand Noble off, as he had just been very lucky to escape a second yellow.

And I can half understand Jarvis on, to give him the chance to come into form.

But why not move Valencia more central instead of bringing Cole on?

Re: strange substitutions
I'm sorry but its really hard to give Sam 'credit' for picking the side today that everybody with half a brain would pick!! The sude that did so well from the onset that he IGNORED when AC returned!!
Its a no brainer!!

His subs have been unimaginable at times this season, if it aint broke dont fix it!! Worst case if Noble had been silly and got sent off it would be sonething you can't account for.It rarely happens with him. Cole sub was bizarre in the extreme and may well have cost us. It wasn't thr right sub at 2.0 up, at 3.0 it could have been justified as timewasting no more!!

Re: strange substitutions
If he felt he had to take Noble off, fair enough, but Cole was absolutely the wrong replacement. I just don't know what goes through the prick's head sometimes.

Still we ended up with one more point than I was expecting so it wasn't a total disaster.

Re: strange substitutions
Do we really need a thread on the subs when its on the match thread??

Re: strange substitutions
I'd say it's pretty obvious that the relationship between players like Noble and Song on the one hand and Allardyce and Nolan on the other is totally on the rocks.

This season is getting nasty now.

Re: strange substitutions
Nobles own fault today. Silly booking put him under pressure and then he should have been sent off. One more could and he would have gone so he had to come off to keep 11 on the pitch.

Re: strange substitutions
The CFC substitution was a joke, it completely changed our shape, a shape that was clearly working very well. It very clearly cost us the win

We have zero options for subs in the diamond formation if one of Noble, Kouyate or Song need to come off. I think Poyet has had about 30 minutes all season ( was he injured today?) If not why is he not on the bench, did we really need JOB, Ginger and Demel on the bench? Are we ever going to change 3 of the back 4?

claretandblue 4:14 Sun Feb 22
Re: strange substitutions
Cost us the match. Already with Downing playing we have someone who cannot tackle. To then put Cole and Jarvis on gives us 3 non-tackling players. Valencia is young and fit and will continue to run for 90mins and put pressure on oppodition defence. Terrible decision and sums up Fat Sam. Noble was booked, so needed to be replaced, but not by above.

Re: strange substitutions
What substitutions are made is far less important than what the players do on the pitch. I think we over-emphasise this after matches because it's a thing that we see the manager do. Maybe his subs could be better, some are slightly strange I admit, but I don't think it's a major factor.

Re: strange substitutions
So, who still thinks Cole is worth his place, even for a few minutes? Still stinking the place out I see. Odds on if Allardyce stays he'll give Cole another year, such is his fantastic contribution week in week out....

Re: strange substitutions
I don't think anyone could understand the Cole for Noble change. He wasn't even a nuisance when he came on. Jarvis was also disappointing.
I'd expect a player who wants to get more game time to be busting a gut to impress but both of these today looked to be going through the motions and looked like they didn't want to be there.
I hope this Nene guy comes with the same attitude as our front two who were excellent again today. With him and Amalfitano back from suspension then we may have better options on the bench as when we were winning in this game I didn't really feel there was anyone I'd want to bring on.

ornchurch ammer 4:21 Sun Feb 22
Re: strange substitutions
I would have brought JOB on for Noble.
Might not do the same job but enables us to keep the same shape and he does like a tackle.

Billy Blagg 4:23 Sun Feb 22
Re: strange substitutions
Perhaps he's been on WHO, realised that he is not as sophisticated as the posters on here and decided he would only make attacking substitutions and not try and lock the game up for a win... BOOO! Allardyce out (etc.)

Re: strange substitutions
I can understand Noble going off as the ref had to send him off if he committed another foul. I absolutely cannot understand swapping him for Cole.
